Notes
*Second graders ended their music time by learning how to square dance. If they haven't already, please ask your child to show you how to bow, dosi-do, sashay down, peel the orange and go under the arch. If this is something you would like to do at a family gathering, you may access this song through my website, http://cristystephenson.wix.com/music
Have fun dancing!
*Students have Leadership teams again this week on Friday. Each group is doing an important job or project to help our school. They are really enjoying being a part of these teams!
What We are Learning
Reading and Writing- We are starting our brand new ELA unit focused on the Wild West. We started out our learning with an introduction to Tall Tales. We read two versions of Paul Bunyan and compared and contrasted the two stories.
Spelling- We did not take our Unit 9 test on Friday because we ran out of time. We will take it today and continue with our next list with a test on Friday.
Math- We learned our first strategy for adding and subtracting. It’s called the Arrow Way. It is a simplifying strategy to help students add and subtract ones. We also learned about Compensation. This strategy is another way to manipulate numbers to make easier numbers to add and subtract mentally. Attached you will see examples of these two strategies. We will be teaching the students the traditional method of adding and subtracting. We haven’t gotten there yet. The idea is to show all of the different ways and to let students pick which way works for them.
Science- The students presented their Weather Research projects on Friday. We will be moving on to our next unit of Social Studies where we will learn about maps and landforms.
